The First Snowflake

As fiery Apollo steps down in the skies
The whole earth in gold and red hues lies
The fairy king and his elves arise
For mischief and fun beneath the moon flies

And upon such a wonderful winter night
As the gleaming stars shone forth with pure light
And all manner of bird and moth take flight
Came forth a tender and lovely sight

The first snow flake of the year’s making
Twinkled down with twirls and shaking
From the foggy mountain its flight taking
A small flying diamond in a world unwaking

And all of nature spied the herald dear
Of winter’s frost and ice so clear
But its cold was small and brought no fear
Instead all loved the little snow flake’s cheer

But it fluttered down toward the ground
Twixt river clear and green earthy mound
To where the malicious ivy abounds
And came to rest without a sound

There it rested in the light of the moon
And felt the cool evening breezes come soon
And fluttered of from its perch on the dune
Back into the heavens towards it doom

For Sweet Aurora in the heavens soon glowed
Her warm hands in the sun’s yellow
But the little diamond did not know
Not to go and greet her because he was made of snow
And so passed the first snowflake, as you may know.
