To the Flame

There is a languid flame
Which burns at the heart
And sees no touch of rain
The dry dust aches
And Ceres still searches for her daughter
While the great Fury
Let loose by Aries' blood hands
Set hold upon the heart flame
And with warm breath
Breathed the flame into inferno
And the flames rose
And the smoke rose
And the sparks were in his eyes
And the heart rose
And the heart died
And the pyre would not hold it

Tantulus wept as Zeus for Sarpedon
While the tongue of Lavinia crept on the floor
All that was once so green and alive
Blasted brittle and yellow by Thanatos' breath
And all caught fire
And all did burn
And all was given
To the flame
